National Mathematics Day Celebration

To honor the birth anniversary of the eminent Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, Avihpsam commemorated National Mathematics Day on December 22, 2023. The event took place at Prajnan Bhawan, Amarabati Kalyan Samity, Sodepur, Kolkata – 700110, with the aim of engaging and enlightening people about the profound realm of Indian Mathematics with the focus on highlighting its global significance and current enduring legacy. The event was graced by esteemed individuals, including Prof. Pradip Kr. Majumder (renowned Mathematician and Historian of Mathematics), Prof. Binayak Samaddar Chowdhury (Department of Mathematics, IIEST, Shibpur, West Bengal), and Shree Sankar Narayan (Researcher on the relevance of Indian Ganita) and other eminent personalities. Furthermore, several students from various institutes were invited to present their own papers at the event.

At 1:00 PM, the inaugural candle was lit, and Mangalik mantras were chanted, marking the beginning of Avihpsam's journey to enlighten society through the exploration of History and Philosophy of Science, Arts, and Music. The organization embarked on this path on Teachers' Day in 2020, and this pursuit has now culminated in the organization of the present program, which commenced with the recitation of shlokas from ancient Hindu Scriptures, adding a profound spiritual essence to the event.

At 1:20 PM, the enchanting tunes of the students of the renowned singer, Smt. Sangeeta Sengupta, addressing the Nandanik Bhawan of Avihpsam, extended a warm welcome to all attendees of the ceremony. The students of Avihpsam, namely, Rishita, Smaraklipi, Krijita, Rudra, and Kalyan, showcased their musical prowess. The audience gained a deeper understanding of Avihpsam as the musical course revolved around the captivating theme of Dhrupad, showcasing this aspect of the organization's offerings.

At 1:30 PM, the distinguished main guest of the ceremony, Prof. Binayak Samaddar Chowdhury from the Indian Institute of Engineering, Science, and Technology, Shibpur, graciously shared his wisdom with the students and the audience. Having published over 300 papers in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Physics across Asia, America, Europe, and other areas, his expertise and insights left a lasting impression on everyone present.

At 2:15 PM, the eagerly awaited moment arrived as students from various disciplines took the stage to present their papers on diverse topics, ranging from the invention of zero to the global impact of Indian mathematics to mathematical chronology and more. The exchange of ideas and knowledge further enriched the experience, fostering an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and appreciation for the legacy of mathematics.

At 3:00 PM, guests and students’ were recognized for their achievements and were presented with accolades. The details are given below. Binoy Mandal and Mayukh Sen got the Brahmagupta Memorial Award for their paper on ‘Zero’. Bikramark Samaddar Choudhury received the Pingal Memorial Award.

At 3:20 PM, Shri Shankar Narayanan, another eminent mathematician from the South, emphasized the reasons behind students' fear of Mathematics nowadays and shared his own journey of overcoming this. He offered valuable insights on how to help students overcome their apprehensions and embrace the subject with confidence.

At 4:20 PM, a lively question-and-answer session commenced, allowing the audience to ask various questions. The students from Nandanik Bhawan, namely, Aradhya, Rathi, Namrata, Ahana, and Ranindita, then graced the occasion with their mesmerizing musical performances, adding a perfect harmony to the ceremony. Their unique musical notes left a lasting impression on everyone present, making the event truly memorable.

4.20 P.M

At 4:35 PM, the focus of the celebration settled to the mathematics prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan, in honor of whom Ganita Dibasa was celebrated. Aparupa Bhattacharya from Bhairav Gangully College passionately shared the inspiring life story, remarkable works, and invaluable contributions of Ramanujan in the field of mathematics. Her engaging presentation brought the legacy of this brilliant mathematician to the forefront, leaving the audience in longing to know more of his extraordinary achievements.

At 4:55 PM, the vice-chairperson of Avihpsam dug into the fascinating world of Indian Ganita, highlighting its profound significance and its practice long before it’s understanding elsewhere. During the speech, the focus was on how the knowledge of Ganita spread to other countries, leaving a lasting impact on the global development of mathematics. In addition, he inspired the audience to explore the rich Indian history of mathematics and he urged everyone to embrace its transformative power and use it as a tool for positive change and progress.

4.55 P.M

At 5:30 PM, the ceremony drew to a close with a heartwarming speech by President Prof. Pradip Kr Majumder. His inspiring words left a lasting impression on all attendees, motivating them to reflect on how their knowledge and passion for mathematics can positively impact various aspects of life. The event concluded with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and a shared commitment to embracing the transformative potential of mathematics in shaping a better future.
